You know, an honest and candid conversation with a close friend that cares about you is powerful!
Last week I had a short but very impactful conversation with a very good friend of mine (shout out to the humble and wise Glenn Colleto).
On our call I shared with Glenn the projects that I wanted to really focus on this summer and scale in order to help pivot my own lifestyle business from a "freelance" one to one model to a "digital education" one to many model.
Now, don't get me wrong, while I love one on one coaching and motivational speaking, as I get older and I realize I have fewer and fewer years with my kids (while they are still kids) over the last year I have had a greater desire to put better online systems in place so I can have even greater reach and impact minus all of the business travel and prospecting.
These are the systems, ironically, I have taught and coached my clients to implement but have eschewed and neglected for myself (who else knows what I'm talking about..? Just keeping it real yawl).
So, after I ranted for 15 minutes Glenn simply asked the powerful question:
What is your 5?
The moment he asked me that question I knew exactly where he was going, and frankly I needed him to go there with me.
If you don't know about the Rule of 5, it's a term coined by John C. Maxwell that explains why and how he has been able to accomplish so much in his life time. Here's a short video where John explains the Rule of 5!
In a nutshell, the Rule of 5 is all about being intentional and consistent in doing the 5 "mission critical" activities you've identified will yield you the best and greatest results over time.
John Maxwell has been able to author over 75 books on leadership, run multiple successful coaching companies, and has been an adviser to many of the world's leaders. He attributes his prolific success to the Rule of 5.
Over his lifetime he has been intentional and consistent with "his 5:"
- He reads
- He thinks
- He files
- He asks questions &
- He writes
That's how John Maxwell uses the rule of 5!
So, when Glenn asked me what was my 5 it forced me to cut through all of the clutter and noise that I had generated and return to "what matters most" and "what works best," as it relates to my summer goal.
Let me tell you, by the next day after taking the time to think and process hard, I texted him my 5. I can't begin to tell you the clarity, efficiency, and focus I have had in just one week of implementing this simple rule again in my life.
So this brings me to the question for you:
What Is Your 5?
Let me encourage you to take some time to think about what you want to accomplish. Think about what area of your life you want to see measurable results in.
Think about and distill down what are the 5 mission critical things you must be intentional and consistent with daily to get you there.
Then immediately write them down and hold yourself accountable to them each day.
Are you in?
